Apple Twist – Review

In my homeschool, I have a 6-year-old, a 2-year-old, and a 2.5-month-old. There are times I need my 6-year-old occupied but still want her learning. Which is when I pull out the amazing Smart Games from Timberdoodle. I even use them as rewards for completing schoolwork when we are having a rough day where she doesn’t really want to be doing schoolwork.

So far my daughter and I have loved all the Smart Games we have tried so far and our newest game, Apple Twist, did not disappoint. Apple Twist comes in the Timberdoodle Kindergarten Curriculum kit.

In Apple Twist three adorable hungry caterpillars have to share one apple. The task is to bend and shape these 3-D caterpillars until they all fit on the apple. I love how adjustable and easy to manipulate the caterpillars are, but even better is the uniquely adjustable apple gameboard with five rotating sections.

All your child (or you) has to do is pick one of the 60 challenges from the included booklet, turn the apple segments as indicated on the challenge, and then bend the caterpillars into place.  There is only one solution for each challenge, and the included booklet has the answers as well.

The challenges are organized from Starter level to Master level which allows this game to challenge children ages 5 and up. The Starter challenge all use the same board orientation and provides hints on where the caterpillars should be placed. Some of the later challenges provide where each colored head should be and you then need to determine where to place the rest of the caterpillar. In the Master level challenges you are provided one grey head or just the game board orientation and nothing else (those give me difficulty; I’m looking at you challenge 59).

I loved watching my daughter place the caterpillars on the apples and watching how she problem solved. In the beginning she would place the heads on the apple and then try and manipulate the caterpillars in place from there. A few days into playing and she was manipulating the caterpillars before placing them on the apple gameboard.

Your kiddo (and you, if you’re like me) will have fun all while, building spatial awareness, logic, problem-solving, and visual perception skills. Which is the reason I love Timberdoodle kits so much.  They keep the fun in learning at all grade levels.

You find Apple Twist here and for even more kindergarten items you can find the Timberdoodle Kindergarten kit here.
